Tips for storing your Christmas decorations!
When Christmas is over, it’s time to pack the decorations away in the loft until next year.
No doubt come December you will once again be greeted by a box of broken baubles, tangled lights and a wonky tree topper.
Although it’s tempting to take your decorations down as quickly as possible and hastily throw them in boxes in a bid to get your house back to normal, taking the time now to ensure your decorations are stored away properly will ensure your decorations last longer and always look their best.
1. Lights – The best way to store lights to avoid damage and dreaded knots is to wrap them around bits of the leftover cardboard (or
even kitchen roll tubes) you have from the festive period. This prevents damage and keeps them all in a neat and tidy wrap, ready to just be unwind and put up next year. A handy tip is to write on the cardboard the colour, length of the lights and where you intend to put them. This will save you time next year.
2. Tree – The box which your tree came in may seem like the obvious way to store your tree, but the reality is that cardboard boxes can begin to deteriorate, making your Christmas tree the ideal place for insects to live and dust to settle in. Instead, when dismantling your tree, take the time to make it as compact and neat as possible and tightly wrap layers of Clingfilm around it or keep it wrapped in an old dust sheet. This keeps dirt, bugs, dust or moisture from getting into the tree and spoiling it. Come December all you need to do is simply run a pair of scissors up a side of the Clingfilm or unwrap the sheets and fluff it back into shape.
3. Baubles – Make use of egg boxes to store smaller decorations. Smaller baubles and tree ornaments will fit snugly and can be stacked into larger boxes away from the risk of being damaged. As a substitute, use leftover plastic cups from the festive period. Alternatively, place ornaments in a cup and store them away individually upright with a dust sheet or spare cardboard covering them from dirt and another layer of protection away from damage.
