This Valentine’s Day will be a little different to previous ones, with many date ideas no longer possible; we have come up with a few simple ideas to create a romantic and memorable date night at home. No matter what you choose to do, the most important thing to remember is are to make your dates about connecting and doing something different for a few hours away from your everyday routines.
- Turn Your Dining Room or Patio into a Dining Destination
The most common thing to do on valentines is to enjoy a special meal out together, but with reservations being cancelled this year, why not try transforming your home into your very own restaurant. First things first: Set the mood by pulling out the good dishes, using a tablecloth, lighting candles, and Playing soft background music.
When it comes to choosing a menu, it is up to what works best for you: If you enjoy cooking, find some recipes you can create together if you want to cook but would not mind using a few shortcuts, try buying prepared food at your local grocery store or using a meal-prep service like Riverford or Hello Fresh or forget cooking altogether and order your favourite takeaway.
2. Have a desert date.
If you don’t want to do a romantic dinner date how about a desert date! Dessert is easy to pick up to go from a restaurant while saving on the bill for an entrée. You could also pick up something from a local bakery you have meant to try or make ice cream sundaes with a bunch of different ice cream flavours and toppings. Go all out on your dessert since it will be the focus of your date.
3. Homemade pizza night
The best part about making your own pizzas is that you can go wild when it comes to toppings. No one can judge your Hawaiian pizza in the comfort of your home, right?
4. Movie night
An oldie but a Goldie – if you have not already had too many movies nights or watched everything on Netflix this is always a cute and romantic at-home date night- try an old black and white film for something a little different.
5. At-home wine tasting
If you have some old favourite wines that remind you of a special time as a couple, those wines are a great place to start or to add a bit of a twist pick up a couple of bottles of wine that you have not tried before and create your very own at-home wine tasting experience. If you have no idea where to start, there are plenty of wine subscriptions sites that have a great selection, and you never know you might find your new favourite wine.
6. Games Night
Playing games together is something many of us did with the family growing up, but nowadays, we rarely get to do with each other. A games night gives you a chance to spend one-on-one time together while doing something fun. You could go traditional and play scrabble, monopoly or Jenga or you might prefer something a little more modern such as a video game or online game.
7. Spa Night
Creating a luxurious and relaxing spa in your very own home might sound like a lot of work. But it doesn’t have to be. You can keep things simple by doing couples facials, manicures, pedicures, massages, and having a special bath with bubbles , rose petals, or bath bomb. For the perfect ambience, light some candles, lay fresh towels and play some relaxing spa music. Then take turns giving each other spa services; this is sure to create a date filled with pampering and fun.
8. Star Gazing
Enjoy a night under the stars. Create a truly magical experience by setting up blankets and pillows in the backyard and enjoy star gazing together. Either enjoy the magical atmosphere or combine your stargazing with a picnic to give it a real date night feel without having to go further than your backyard.
9. Breakfast in bed
Not a traditional date ‘night’ but why not try celebrating in the morning by creating a “breakfast” date. Bust out the tray tables and eat your breakfast in bed, you can even pretend you are in a fancy hotel. You can prepare everything together or surprise your partner by bringing them breakfast in bed for a romantic surprise.
10. YouTube dance lessons
If you have always wanted to take dance lessons, YouTube is full of videos for people of all fitness and experience levels, and they feature videos for every style of dancing. Push the furniture back to create your very own dance floor, bring up a video on the big screen, put on your dancing shoes, and fancy dress and have fun learning some new routines.
11. Cocktail making
Who does not like a cocktail making class! So why not create your own mixology night which is guaranteed to make some fun and unforgettable memories. Research your favourite cocktail or mocktail recipes beforehand and decide on a couple of different cocktails or treat yourself to a cocktail making kit too! Or, if you want to drink cocktails, rather than make them, there are plenty of pre-bottled cocktails being delivered right to your door.
12. Karaoke Night
Time to get the party started with a fun at-home karaoke night. This could be as simple as playing some of your favourite songs or albums, getting up karaoke YouTube videos or go all out and hire a karaoke machine. Even if you are not the most musical, this is a great date night that is sure to put a smile on everyone’s face.
13. At home mini golf
This date will take a little more planning and setting up, but it is worth it! You can make it as hard or as easy as you like, set up a few different holes for your at-home by using cardboard to make ramps and cups for the holes. Plus, it will make for a great activity with the kids the next day, too.
14. Make a bed picnic.
Get out your snazziest PJs, and enjoys this delicate feast in the sheets. Get your favourite sweet treats and nibbles to create the most comfortable picnic ever, from the comfort of your own bed, for those messy eaters, maybe plan this right before laundry day.
15. Twenty questions
classic but always a good choice in playing 20 questions. Learn about your partner by asking some questions; they could be anything from deep and meaningful to fun and silly; this is a simple date to bring you even closer together.
16. Truth or Dare.
Remember playing this game with your friends in college? You can customize the game and play it with your partner on a date night. Play it at home or in a park, the choice is yours! You can come up with funny or romantic questions if your partner chooses ‘truth.’ Otherwise, make them do what they hesitate to if they choose a ‘dare.’ Either way, you can enjoy playing it.
17. Bowling night
Go bowling! Use your hallway or kitchen, and set up pins at one end and enjoy a night bowling. A fun game night once in a while can help you unwind while also letting you bond with your significant other.
18. Power out night.
It is not a traditional date night, but why not pretend the electricity is out and use it as a cute at-home date night. As an adult, if the electricity went out, it could be considered a nightmare, but it was a lot of fun as a kid and found so many ways to entertain ourselves. Why not turn this into a fantastic couple’s night in date idea! Light candles, play games, tell ghost stories… come to think of it, sounds like the perfect romantic stay at home date night idea! Put away your electronics and make-believe the electricity is out.
19. Create your own game show.
One of the all-time best game shows is Mr and Mrs; the game’s basic premise is straightforward. There are two types of questions: A Him/her and a matching question. The matching question segment is self-explanatory. Ask a series of questions to each partner in secret. Then, have their other half try to come up with the same answer. You can take turns creating your own questions and see how much your partner knows about you- you never know, you might even learn a thing or two.
20. Indoor camping
While camping in the great outdoors may not be for everyone; there is no denying it can help couples reconnect and renew their relationship. Unfortunately, getting out in the wilderness is not always practical – or even desired. Luckily, you can reap the same benefits by taking the activity indoors. This is a pretty simple date night to set up. It is best to have your “camping site” ready to go ahead of time for maximum effect and romance. Use lights and the glow-in-the-dark stars to help create an outdoor feel. When using candles, make sure to keep them away from the bedding and tent.
